The Belt of Truth

“Stand firm then with the belt of truth buckled around your waist…” Ephesians 6:14 NIV

I don’t know about you, but for most of my life I saw the Armor of God scripture as a fun metaphor and not much more. I never considered that each piece in itself might hold a deeper significance and ultimately reflect Christ until just recently.

So, without further ado… let’s talk about the Belt of Truth!

1. Rooting our lives in God’s Truth is foundational.

A belt is something that holds the rest of the ensemble together. Though I would consider it one of the last things to put on, Paul mentions it first. I believe that’s because it’s the most critical and without it, the rest of your armor falls apart.

The original language in this section translates more directly to something like “gird your loins with truth.” This gives us a little bit of a clearer picture of what Paul was communicating. See, in scripture, the loins are considered the central point of the body. To bind the central point of your body together with truth means everything else you do will be rooted and grounded in truth. Starting here ensures that every other piece of armor is operating within the sphere of biblical truth.

The belt is also the piece of armor that holds your sword and your sword happens to be your only offensive weapon described in Ephesians 6. How significant that your only weapon be held up and supported by God’s truth!

Looking at it that way, I can definitely see why Paul would list the belt first!

When we’re standing on His Truth, we cannot be shaken. We have a solid foundation, not a shaky one. That’s because that foundation of truth is Jesus Christ Himself. He is our belt of truth that holds everything together.

“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” - Colossians 1:17

...which beautifully leads us right into my next takeaway.

2. Jesus tells us He is the truth and He is the only way to come into

relationship with the Father.

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” - John 14:6

Part of the purpose of this series is to see where we find Jesus in each piece of the armor and this one is easy! Scripture tells us on no uncertain terms that Jesus IS truth. When we wrap ourselves with the belt of truth, we are wrapping ourselves in Jesus.

Can you think of a better way to prepare for battle?

“In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God.” - 1 John 1:1

One way to interpret 1 John 1:1 is acknowledging Jesus as the word of God. He was present at the creation of the world and when Jesus became a man, he became the living and breathing Word of God in action. That’s wild!

So Church, I urge you to strap on your belts of truth, establish your foundation in Christ and let’s prepare for battle.
