The Helmet of Salvation

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” - Ephesians 6:12

The bible states that our battle is not a physical one. We are not fighting against flesh and blood or things that we can see. It is in the unseen world that is coming against us every day.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” - Ephesians 6:10

Here it says to be strong in the Lord and the power of his might. This suggests that we need to be in God who has the experience of defeating the enemy of this world.

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” - Ephesians 6:11

Paul tells us to put on the whole armor of God. The main purpose is to help us stand. The armor is our protection from the spiritual attacks we will face. If we do not obey his instructions, we will not endure the battle to maintain the victory.

An unprepared soldier will sustain life threatening injuries, could possibly run from the battle, and may even die if he goes onto the battlefield unprepared. As the children of God, He would never send us out to battle without being properly prepared.

He knows what it will take.

An important part of that armor is the helmet of salvation. It is placed upon our heads and keeps out the crud from the enemy.

Salvation means deliverer, defender, or defense.

It is the preservation or deliverance from sin and its consequences. It could also mean help or saving. When you think about a deliverer, it is one who delivers, releases or rescues. We know through Christ that we are saved, and he has delivered us from the bondage of our sin.

Our deliverance is sure, and he paid the ultimate price for our lives. We can confidently stand knowing that in Christ we live. We are saved through the shedding of his blood for the remission of our sins.

We must think about these things when the enemy comes to attack our minds with the notion that we are not truly free. We have been redeemed! Freed from death, we are no longer bound.

“...therefore if the Son makes you free, you are free indeed.” - John 8:36

We are wearing Christ upon our heads which affect our thoughts.

The enemy will attack our minds with thoughts of being uncovered or not truly delivered. This can cause us to waver and stagger at the promises of God. He attacks us with thoughts that we are not worthy of being rescued and that we are alone in the battle.

When we are unsure of our savior, we will entertain the lies of the enemy. If we use our natural eyes to see, it is possible that we could come into agreement with the enemy and try to save ourselves. We might run away, leaving ourselves open and vulnerable to a blow to the head that could potentially kill our faith in God.

The battles we face are daily. Therefore we must put on the helmet of salvation daily.

As a woman, I am constantly being fought in the area concerning my identity. The enemy loves to use our love for our family as a weapon against us.

Just recently, I discovered during our women’s meeting that I was dealing with some anxiety. As the speaker began to expound upon the word, she told us that fear is a symptom of not knowing who we are.

Another word for fear is anxiety.

Those words hit me because I was struggling with doing something for myself. Anxiety wanted to set in and tell me that I am not included, and I was not worthy of doing something for myself. I was looking ahead in the future and telling myself that things would fall apart if I did something for myself.

The enemy tried to convince me that I wasn’t being responsible, and I needed to save my family from any hardship that could arise down the road. I needed to take those thoughts captive.

“...casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” - 2 Corinthians 10:5

I had to trade places with the thoughts that were trying to bound me. If I am arguing with the enemy, I am now defending my place instead of confidently walking in what Christ has done for me.

Christ is my defender, and he will stand up and fight for me, and support me no matter what. He will help and aid me with whatever I need daily, and he will do the same for you.

“Therefore, I say unto you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?” - Matthew 6:25

You must believe that you are worth more simply because while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. He already paid the debt for our lives. So, he is fully aware and capable of meeting our daily needs no matter the circumstance.

Salvation through Christ will preserve us until the coming of the Lord. We must not take off the helmet of salvation for it keeps our minds stayed upon Christ and the sacrifice he made for us on Calvary.

“You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed upon you because he trusts in you.” - Isaiah 26:3

With the helmet of salvation, we can stand knowing we are not fighting alone and that our salvation is sure because of Christ and the cross.
