Wave the White Flag

One of my favorite artists is the gospel group Mary Mary. They have a song on their third album called “Never Wave My Flag.” In the song, it talks about never surrendering to fear or retreating. They are getting closer to attaining their dreams, seemingly unstoppable. They will never wave their flag.

But there are times when the white flag is necessary to get to our destiny.

Historically, any time a war was fought, it could be said that they fought until someone surrendered. They would wave a white flag and surrender to the authority of another. This flag was a sign that their opponent was more powerful and capable of overthrowing them. Surrendering before allowing more blood to be shed.

This sometimes is seen as a weakness but surrender is a sign of strength. Before allowing any more casualties, I would rather surrender to their authority. I do not want to see anyone hurt because of my ego. I am willing to admit defeat.

Therefore, when we surrender to God, we are not defeated but we become victorious in our surrender.

Surrender reminds us who we truly are.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you: Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” - Jeremiah 1:5

God doesn’t want us to come under his authority to beat us down, but to build us up. He knows us better than we know ourselves.

We tend to know ourselves in parts. Our Father knows us as a whole.

God wants to reunite us with His purpose and plan for our lives. When we are living outside the will of God, we are living outside of our birthright. We will continue to go down the path that we think is right but will eventually end up leading us to death.

“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.” - Proverbs 16:25

He desires us to walk in the fullness of who we are because we were created in His image. Surrender is about reuniting with our creator and living out the rest of our days in peace and harmony with Him.

When we refuse to surrender, we maintain a distance from Him and we will not know who He truly is because we have separated ourselves from Him. Surrendering to God gives me insight to who I am in Him.

Surrender brings stability.

He takes responsibility for us and He makes decisions for us according to His plan. He tells us to rest while we learn of Him. He gives us what he wants us to do and He handles it all.

Balance is something we struggle with because we believe we need to handle our lives on our own…alone. This creates unnecessary weight and burdens where we must make decisions and choose what is best. God builds an unbreakable foundation we can be confident in when we stand on it in Him.

“No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” - 1 Corinthians 3:11

We can rest because our foundation is secure.

Surrender brings safety.

When I was talking with some of my sisters in the Lord, I was reminded that I had taken risks that go beyond what I can see. I was no longer playing it safe. Playing it safe keeps YOU in control.

We must be willing to let go and let God.

“Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” - Psalm 23:4

I do not have to be afraid when the shepherd walks with me and watches over me. I surrender to His will and His way. He will lead me in the path of righteousness. I am safe in Him.

Surrender is about your future, not your past.

When God asks you to wave the white flag of surrender, He is asking you to let Him take control. You have gotten as far as you are going to go and He wants to take you so much further. He wants to take you all the way through eternity.

We must be willing to give Him full control of the life we planned and allow His perfect plan for our life. Jessica stated something very powerful in one of her recent blog posts. She said, “If God is a good God, I can trust that He will make good choices for me.”

Surrender is trusting God with my life.

I am no longer responsible for it. He can take his rightful place in my life as the head. I no longer have to be everything for myself. He is my all in all and my surrender is going to allow me to see Him in my life daily.
